Furniture size and carrying in large furniture
Checking new accommodation in Japan
Even in the apartments designed for expats, size of the furniture is sometimes problem.
It is recommended to confirm following size of the house or apartment before shipping your furniture from your country.
Elevator Size
Elevator Door Siz
Check the open dimension of the elevator door. The width of the door must be larger than the depth of the sofa.
Elevator Cargo Size
Check the cargo size of the elevator. Height of the elevator cargo shall be larger than the width of your sofa and the length of your bed. 。
Entrance and Hallway Size
Entrance Door Size
Check the entrance door. The inner width of the door shall be larger than the depth of sofa.
Width of the Hallway
Check the hall and the room doors. Sometimes if the hall width is too narrow, large sofas and beds are not able to go through from the hall to the rooms.
Bedroom Door Size
If the hallway is not wide enough or the bedroom is not wide enough, King size beds may not go into the bedroom.
Find suitable beds
King size bed is around 180cm. Instead of using one mattress, you can use two 90cm width mattresses which willb e attached in the middlle.
Using frame beds instead of boxspring maybe also helpful.
Japanese Furniture Size
Sofa Size
Japanese domestic sofa’s width is around 180 - 200cm (70”-78”), which is smaller than western sofa’s width. Seat height is around 38 - 42 cm (12.5” – 16.5”), which is much lower than western seat height. Seats are mostly hard.
Coffee Tables Size
Domestic coffee tables are 70 - 130 cm length, width is 50 - 90cm and the height is 28 – 38 cm. 。
Dining Furniture Size
Japanese domestic dining tables are for 2 to 6 people. Width is from 70 to 90 cm, length is 120 to 180cm, height is 68 to 70cm. Dining chairs are smaller and lower.
Cabinets Size
There are great variety of side boards, china cabinets, TV cabinet and chests with many sizes are widely used in Japan. The size is similar to western ones.
Large wall cabinets are sometimes difficult to dissemble and assemble when moving.
Using plural cabinets around 90cm width will be much easier when moving.
Tension Rods
Earthquakes are common in Japan. Using plastic stability baord beneath the tall cabinet is encouraged to prevent falling of tall furniture. or tension rods to place between cabinet top and ceiling
Stability Board
Placing stability board between the furniture top and ceiling is also encouraged to preventtall cabinet or refregerator from toppling over
